Please, please PLEASE!!! Can something be done about the baseball announcers on FOX & ESPN and to a lesser extent TBS. When I watch Red Sox games on NESN, I expect Jerry Remy and Donny-O to have a certain bias towards the Red Sox. But a National Broadcast team? We should be able to expect an impartial broadcast team who actually talks about the two teams who are playing! When my Red Sox are playing the TB Rays - I really do not want to hear about the Yankees! Over and over and over again...

I can not take it anymore! Something has got to be done about them. And the sooner the better.

I had some other things I was going to write about - but as I was writing my blog today, the news broke about the attack at Fort Hood in Texas..

and that put a lot of things into perspective. As of this time - 13 people have been killed (including the suspected gun man), 31 people have been wounded and the relative safety that those who live and work at the largest US Army base in the world enjoyed has been shattered. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims and to all our men and women in the military. It shakes our feelings of safety when we see something like this happen to those who are charged with protecting us. God Bless you all and thank you.

http://freepages.military.com

No. Do I see a diminished role for Lowell soon? Perhaps.

http://www.sitv.com

Lowell had hip surgery in the off-season last year and his range of motion is limited. Balls hit right at him, he had no trouble fielding. And while he was never the faster player running bases, at times last season he seemed so very slow. However - the man could still hit! He will be turning 36 in February and is going into the last year of his contract. I don't think the Red Sox will trade him this off-season, but unless he regains a lot more of his range, I don't see him being the day-to-day third baseman. I think we will see the Red Sox shifting him into more of a DH role (we won't even get into the Big Papi discussion here) where the Red Sox can take advantage of his hitting abilities. So if we don't have Mikey on third - what do we do? Do we move Youk over to third base and get a new first baseman or do we look for a new third baseman? Someone like, say, Chone Figgins? His URZ was 14.5 last season (3rd best in the majors) and he had a.298 batting average and a.395 on-base percentage while stealing 42 bases. Just a thought..

http://mysportsrumors.com

I think. Jason Bay has indicated that he would like to play in Boston next year, but to date no deal has been reached. The rumors are that Bay wants a contract for more years then the Red Sox are willing to offer. And that is actually pretty consistent with what the Red Sox do. When a player reaches a "certain age" the Red Sox only like to tie them up for a 2 to 3 year contract. And in some respect, that makes sense. Now some might argue that we should look elsewhere for a left-fielder based solely on Bay's defensive numbers - but I'm not buying that. I think numbers can be deceiving and there is a reason both the Red Sox (and probably Scott's team) are interested in signing him. He put up good numbers at the plate and runners who have challenged Bay's arm this season using came out on the losing end. I think he is a much better defensive player then the numbers indicate. Where I don't think the numbers lie are when it comes to the defensive abilities of our catchers.

boston.com

Jason Varitek allowed 108 stolen bases over 124 chances. Sigh...And Victor Martinez?

http://cdn0.sbnation.com

He threw out just 2 in 19 chances - NOT to mention the balls that he threw away. In all fairness to V-Mart, he was only played 30 games as catcher for us. The hope is that when he is here for the whole season (and I think it is a very safe bet that he will be our starting catcher next season) he will find some of his 2007-08 form when he threw out 33 percent (46-for-138) of his would-be stealers. But this is a huge problem that the team must address. Teams last year stole at will on the Red Sox - 151 bases were stolen against us. I don't know what the answer to this problem is. Well - maybe I do know part of the answer - Jason Varitek can no longer be our starting catcher.

It makes me sad to say it. But say it I must. Could Tek be a back up catcher? I think so - but I don't know if he would accept the role. I firmly believe that the Red Sox need to be in discussions with Tek to tie him up as a pitching coach. Have him start in the minors - that really is where he needs to begin to learn the ropes - but I suspect that it wouldn't be long before we see him walking out to the mound at Fenway to calm down an anxious pitcher.

It's hard to think about things being wrong with the Red Sox - they did win 95 games after all. But there are some weaknesses (shortstop) that must be addressed. A little tweaking will make a world of difference. You know - a "World Series" of difference.

And now that former Red Sox assistant Jed Hoyer is the new General Manager of the Padres, might the Red Sox have an in on acquiring his services? And would we have to give up one Casey Kelly in order to seal the deal? There are lots of questions that need to be answered - but isn't that was the Hot Stove is all about?

It was the third straight game that a Red Sox starting pitcher had not allowed an earned run.

cbsnews.com

Keith Foulke came in to pitch the 9th inning and when that final out was bounced back to him by Edgar Renteria, Foulke picked it up and underhanded it to Doug Mientkiewicz - he wasn't taking any chances. The game was played under a full moon/lunar eclipse and it was on the exact day of game 7 of the heartbreaking 1986 World Series. But the Red Sox were not to be denied. As was reported by Dan Shaughnessy the next day in the Boston Globe:

They did it for the old folks in Presque Isle, Maine, and White River

Representing the National League will be the defending World Series Champions, the Philadelphia Phillies; and representing the American League will be the New York Yankees. The Phillies are looking to be the first National League Team to win back to back WS since the Cincinnati Reds did in it 1975 & 1976 (Now why does the 1975 WS sound so familiar?) and the Yankees are looking for their first WS since they last won in 2000. I don't think the World Series will be easy for either team, but there will be time to study in detail who has the advantage. Instead I want to bring to your attention the Community Service aspect of the WS.

For the first time Major League Baseball will be putting community service and charitable work on center stage at the World Series. You can read about the effort in the article written by our fearless leader Mark Newman. Each of the first four nights of the WS will feature a different charity or community initiative and with the Series starting in New York, I can not think of a better charity to be hi-lighted on the first night then MLB's Welcome Back Veterans Charity.

If you are a regular reader here you know how I feel about our men and women in uniform and how much I feel we owe them and their families for the sacrifices they make in service to our country. All too often when "dad or mom" returns home - especially if they are returning from combat - they bring with them a lot of baggage that isn't always easy for their family members or friends to see. And the proud manner in which they serve our country often makes our Vets hesitant to reach out for the help they need. Welcome Back Veterans is a charity founded by MLB and its purpose is to help our returning Vets and their families as they make the transition from Military Life to Civilian Life. Many of our returning Vets suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and if left untreated, PTSD can take a terrible toll on not only the Vets but also on their spouses, children and families. One of the main purposes of this charity is to no only help provide services to treat PTSD, but also to remove the stigma of asking for help. They want to make sure that our men and women in uniform know that it is not a sign of weakness to reach out to others.

http://www.yawkeywaystore.com

All of the charities being featured at the World Series - Stand Up to Cancer, Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities and Community Service - are worthy of our support. But the Welcome Back Veterans program is near and dear to my heart. American's Pasttime - this game that I love - is often one of the few "touches of home" that our service men and women have when they are away; especially if they are serving in a combat situation. And what better way for Major League Baseball to give back to them then by supporting this great program. I know we have military bloggers here at MLBlogs - John, a Chaplain in the U.S. Army, writes the blog Getting Back to Fun Again about his beloved Reds - as well as members of the military who are regular readers. Trust me, few Red Sox fans are as loyal or as knowledgeable as my good friend Mike/shakenbake who is serving with the United State Air Force in South Korea. These men and women answered the call to serve. We too need to answer the call to help. So when you ease on back into your comfy chair to watch the World Series kick off on Wednesday night, can you take a moment to offer up a "Thank You" to all those who serve and to their families. They will appreciate and I know that you'll feel better for doing it.

That I do not exhibit "good sportsmanship" because I am not rooting for the Yankees now that the Red Sox are out? Am I wrong to say things like "I hope the Angels win?" Or to tease my friend by telling him that I liked the end of game five of the ALCS? Do Doger fans root for the Giants? Do Cubs and Cardinals fans root for the other team? Will Mets' fans ever pull for the Yankees to win the WS?

http://www.eteamz.com/

Can't I be a fan of the game AND a fan of the Red Sox at the same time? Did I miss the rule that said that when the Red Sox are out of the playoffs that I have to root for the Yankees or hope that they win? If you think that is rude or disrespectful or unsportsmen like, then so be it. You will never find me being rude or disrespectful to other teams and their fans on my blog - but if you think that by my saying I hope one team wins over another that makes me less of a fan of this game that I so very much love - then all I can say is I feel sorry for you. For you have no idea what it is like to feel a passion for a team that you call your own.

And speaking of teams that I am passionate about...

boston.com

The New England Patriots traveled across the Pond - with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers - and the Pats won 35-7. (I know that Rays Renegade was hoping for a different outcome.) It is the second week in a row that the Patriots have taken on a winless team and both times they have won convincingly. Though the Pats did not look as sharp this week as they did last week against the Titans. Today Tom Brady was intercepted twice and he did not come out of the game until the 4th quarter.

boston.com

You can't really say though, that Brady had a bad day. He threw for 302 yards (the 26th time in his career that he has thrown for more then 300 yards) and he also threw 3 TD passes. Brandon Meriweather had two interceptions, including one that he ran back 39 yards for a TD and much like last week, the Pats "spread the love" when it came to scoring TDs. In addition to Meriweather's TD, TDs were also scored by Wes Welker, Sam Aiken, Benjamin Watson and Laurence Maroney. The Pats now have a bye week before they face the Miami Dolphins at home.

http://www.spibl.com

And tonight - Sunday night - we have game 6 of the ALCS. The New York Yankees vs the LA Angels. Joe Saunders vs Andy Pettitte. Game 5 was exciting down to the very last out and I suspect that tonight's game won't be any different. The Yankees lead the series 3-2 and the games has sifted back to New York. Both teams want this series badly - the Yankees missed out on the playoffs last year and the Angels are dedicating this season to a fallen teammate. Who will win? I don't know. But I have said this before - if the Angels win game 6, I think they will take the series. I can't wait for the game to begin!

http://www.semsba.com

chief executive officer Larry Lucchino. And one of the big moves he made in those 10 weeks? The deal that sent shortstop Hanley Ramirez to the

He is quoted as saying:

"I do have some goals in mind. I obviously want to get to 200 wins, and

can't tell you,"

The news on Wakefield is encouraging. And I think he can still be a great contributor to the Red Sox. Before the All-Star Break and his injury he had an 11-3 record and he was on track to have his first 20 win season, to go with his first All-Star selection. I hope that Tim Wakefield is back. Not only do I think he can still help the team - but the way he went out last season? It was NOT the ending that his great career deserved. I can not wait to see him back on the mound at Fenway.

Can they go back-back-back?

http://merage.uci.ed

Watching the LA Angels beat the NY Yankees last night (wasn't the ending great Scott?) was much more stressful then it should have been. (Or at least much more stressful then I expected from a non-Red Sox game!) If you want a summary of the game - you can read that here. (My friend did a great job!) My question is - can the Angels do it again? Or perhaps I should really be asking - do the Yankees really want it? The Angels scored 4 runs in the bottom of the first and it stayed that way until the 7th. The Yankees scored 6 runs in the top of the inning and they were in command - until the bottom of the 7th. The Yankees gave 3 runs then and allowed the Angels to take the lead again. And then it was the top of the 9th.

The Yankees had bases loaded - there was an intentional walk, an unintentional walk and a hit batter - and there were two outs. Who do they send to the plate? The man hitting .118 in the series - NIck Swisher. Seriously? There was no else on the bench who they could use for a pinch hitter? Are they that confident that they will win at home? Nice to be confident. They thought they would win at home in 2004 also.

So what did we learn in game 5? Have the Angels finally found their stride and will they continue playing in the postseason with the passion they have shown all season? Or will the Yankees continue to dominate at home? My prediction? If the Angels can win game 6, they will win the series. Sorry Scott!

Drew. The Phillies drafted him but would not pay the $11 million that Boras wanted, so Drew went to the Northern League as well. MLB amended their draft rules a couple of months later, making Drew still subject to the draft, and in 1998 the Cardinals drafted him and paid the $8.3 million asking price. But is this right?

http://www.mwtb.org

In other sports (like football and basketball) the teams that have the worse records have the first crack at the top talent, but in baseball that doesn't always work out. Boras has locked up so many of the amateur players that some teams don't get a crack at the best players because they won't deal with Boras. They either aren't willing to take the chance and lose out or else they just want to have anything to do with the man. The owners have since amended the draft agreement again to include some compensation for teams - if the drafted player doesn't sign my August 15th, the deal is off and the team gets a compensatory pitch in the same place in the following year's draft. (ie: If Team A had the number 2 pick this year and can not sign their draft pick, then they get the #2 draft pick the following year.) But is this way it should be?

http://www.splitreason.com/

The Major League Owners have only themselves to blame for the rise of Scott Boras. They tried to exploit the players; to keep the money to themselves. And that allowed Boras to come in and claim to be "Robin Hood!" He was going to rob from the rich and give to the poor. Maybe that's what he did at first. And now? Should one person have so much power that he can become the talk of game four of the World Series because he chooses to disrupt it by making an announcement about a client opting-put of a contract? The owners can take the game back from him if they band together and hold strong. They need to tell him no and mean it or they will never be free from him exploiting the game.

http://img2.allposters.com

So what do you believe? That Matt Holliday is the great thing since slice bread or that Johnny Damon is?

http://rlv.zcache.com

That's what I thought.....

In the tradition begun by Jimmy Curran of Baseball, The Yankees and Life, I would like to dedicate my #4 ranking on the Latest Leader's List for the 2009 Regular Baseball Season to a great Red Sox player. But since it was a ranking for the whole season, I wanted to do a very special dedication. And in my mind, there is no one else I should dedicate my ranking to then my all time favorite Red Sox player...

Carl Yaztrzemski

And hey - he wore #8 and 4 x 2 = 8! Yaz made his debut with the Red Sox on April 11, 1961 and played his entire 23-year career in Boston.

Yaz had the good "fortune" to follow Ted Williams in left field. And when he arrived, the Fenway faithful were none to kind. They thought of him as a "workaholic blue-collar player" who would never measure up to the mighty Teddy Ballgame. And then came the "The Impossible Dream"

http://www.fenwayoutlet.com/

The 1967 Boston Red Sox!

That year Yaz won a place forever in the hearts of all Red Sox fans. Not only did he win the Triple Crown (only the third man to do it since Ted Williams - who did it twice) and the AL MVP award, but his performance down the stretch of the regular season was what made him a baseball legend. Over the last twelve games of the season - when 4 teams were still in the pennant race - he helped the Red Sox win 8 of those games by hitting 5 homeruns, 16 RBIs and his batting average over those games? An unbelievable .523! No, the Red Sox did not win the World Series that year, but we had found a left-fielder we could believe in.

In 1968 Yaz again won the batting title - hitting .301. What you ask? How could someone win the batting title hitting only .301? Well 1968 was the "Year of the Pitcher" - the pitching mound had yet to be lowered - and he was the ONLY batter it hit for over .300 take season. He also lead the league in on-base percentage and walks.

In 1969 he had his first of two straight 40 HR seasons. In 1970 he got four hits and won the MVP award at the All-Star Game and he had a career high .329 BA but he lost out on the batting title to Alex Johnson by less than .001! Yaz did lead the league in slugging and on-base percentage and he finished third in home runs.

http://www.baseballhalloffame.org

In the 1975 World Series against the "Big Red Machine" Yaz did make the last out in game 7, however earlier in the game, he began the scoring with a home run off left-handed pitcher Ron Guidry - the only homer the Cy Young winner allowed to a left-handed hitter the whole season. Yaz's career continued until 1983 - but when Jim Rice joined the team in 1974, Yaz realized that Rice was too valuable to have sitting on the bench, so Yaz went to management and said he would play first base so Rice could take over at left-field. Can you imagine a player doing that today?

So just how good was Carl Yastrzemski? At the time of his
retirement, Yaz was the all-time American
League leader in games played (3,308 - now second all time) and was the
only American League player to amass 3,000 hits
and 400 home runs (finishing with 3,419 and 452
respectively) and he had 1,844 RBIs. A
seven-time Gold Glove winner, Yaz earned the
honor of 18 All-Star Game appearances, and is
generally considered one of the finest defensive
left fielders of all-time. He is also the last player in the majors to win the triple crown. In 1989, with 94.63% of the vote, Yaz was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

I hope you have enjoyed my trip down memory lane. It is by learning about the great players of the past that we all become better fans.

Thank you again for stopping by, for reading and for commenting. What a great community we have here at MLBlogs!
